Rocker To Undergo Sex Change
Against Me! singer Tom Gabel will soon begin living as a woman.
In the new issue of Rolling Stone, it’s revealed that Gabel, who has apparently dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will shortly begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.
Gabel will take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather, who is from Windsor, Ontario, as far as I can tell. They have a daughter, Evelyn, born in November, 2009.
“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she [Heather] would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
RS says this is the first time a “major rock star” has come out as transgender – and Gabel has only told a few friends and family so far.
Honestly, “major rock star” is a tad hyperbolic – Against Me!’s highest charting single hit #33 on the rock chart – but good for her, regardless.
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” Gabel told Rolling Stone, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Against Me! formed in 1997 in Naples, Florida, and relocated to Gainesville, Florida, in 1999. Their first album, Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose, was released in 2002, and their most recent White Crosses, came out in 2010.
