Nat Jay

"Lights Across The Sky" CD Release

Vancouver, BC: The Media Club
September 5, 2008
By:Gavin Reid

It may seem as though some of Nat Jay's swaying melodies might be best suited in a fairy tale disney production. And while that may or may not be considered a good thing, there is no denying the fact that there is a rich sophistication deep within this UBC grads' soul. This quality can be found in her lyrics and her bittersweet vocals. Jay's complete skill set was up in lights for all to see and hear Friday night at The Media Club with the official release of her debut album entitled "Lights Across The Sky."

The young songstress was accompanied by a full band and while that was somewhat uncommon ground for Jay, there was little doubt throughout the night that she was comfortable, confident and in control. What made the biggest impression on me was her relaxed demeanor given the importance of the moment. She carried herself with the same ease and grace that sway through her songs and while some were better done than others, Nat Jay came off as a professional. This is definitely the bi-product of growing up surrounded by musicians and music in her family and at her school.

The night started off with the title track to her CD; "Lights Across The Sky," which came off really well in the intimate confines of The Media Club with her full band of two guitar, bass, drums and keyboard. Immediately it was clear that Jay had the chops to stand tall amongst her support. There wasn't any competing or straining from Jay's vocals throughout her one hour set. "Lights Across The Sky" is a slow and bittersweet desert lullaby that perfectly matches Nat Jay's breathy, soulful voice.

The positive vibes rolled along as Jay breezed through Pick up the pieces and Daydreaming before settling down into some acoustic material with accompaniment from one of the earlier acts; Adrian Glynn. The two a fore mentioned songs share a classy fusion of country, soft rock, folk, adult contemporary and pop and her voice is engaging working in each of these different genres. The commercial appeal that led to Jay being featured on ABC's sitcom "Men In Trees" this past March was at this point obvious. That very song, "Love When I Can" served as the nights highlight and while it did not close the show it once more showcased Jay's rich smooth bittersweet tone along with her from-the-heart songwriting.

In support, Vancouver based James Lamb and the Liabilites were a pleasant surprise with their eclectic country-folk sound that included some beautiful harmonies and thoughtful songwriting.
